Tuesday’s Magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu province lasted only seconds but caused widespread damage because it was shallow, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Wednesday.
Phivolcs chief Dr. Teresito Bacolcol said the temblor lasted about 30 seconds but had a depth of only 5 kilometers.
Since seismic energy dissipates as it rises, the shallowness of Tuesday’s quake made it strong enough to wreak severe damage. “The shallower the earthquake, mas malakas ang shaking,” he said in a DZMM interview.
As of 9 a.m., Phivolcs has already recorded 795 aftershocks including 4 “major” ones, with the strongest measuring magnitude 4.8. Most of the aftershocks are clustered in the quake’s epicenter in Bogo City.
Bacolcol said the public should expect more aftershocks in the next few days and even weeks. He urged people to join earthquake drills so they will be prepared for the next temblor.
At least 69 people have died after the quake, with most of the casualties found in the northern part of Cebu province, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
