Residents in Manila on Friday (September 26) took precautions by moving into evacuation centres as Severe Tropical Storm Bualoi, locally known as Opong, barrelled closer.
“We live just by the corner of the river and it would be difficult when the water rises. When the floods from the river surge, the floodwaters reach up to the third floor of our homes and we would not be able to leave. I have three children and I don’t want anything to happen to them.” said 33-year-old resident JC Borromeo as he sought shelter in an evacuation centre.
The Philippine weather bureau placed the storm’s centre near San Isidro, Northern Samar, with maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h and gusts up to 150 km/h, moving west-northwestward at about 30 km/h. They reported that Metro Manila and adjacent areas may experience heavy rainfall with possibilities of flash floods or landslides, especially in vulnerable communities along rivers and coastal areas.
“As Opong crosses the archipelago, it is likely to remain as a severe tropical storm. Re-intensification is highly likely once Opong emerges over the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea),” the weather bureau said.
