Tensions escalate during the ‘Baha sa Mendiola’ protest on Sunday, September 21, when a group of masked individuals sets fire to a truck, prompting police to respond with water cannons.

The group damaged property and threw empty water bottles at officers. Police used tear gas and whistle-bombs to disperse the crowd. Some protesters reported being hit or pushed by police during the dispersal.

The total number of those affected by the tear gas remains unclear, but witnesses say many rushed into a nearby convenience store seeking cold water after being tear-gassed. | Video by Marty Apuhin/Rappler
