By definition, the Ombudsman is the fiscalizer of the bureaucracy. That means he or she can suspend and even fire erring government officials and employees. He or she can probe and file criminal cases against almost all government officials, including the Vice President. Such are the powers Boying Remulla, erstwhile the Justice Secretary, will hold for the next seven years as the Ombudsman.
