The tragic case of 17-year-old Daniela, who was left alive in a ditch after a fatal hit-and-run by Joshua Brown on August 20, has sparked outrage. Daniela was struck around 9:20 PM while standing in the driveway of her boyfriend’s home, and evidence shows that Brown swerved off the road to hit her. Brown, who returned to the scene 20 minutes later in a different vehicle with his parents (his father allegedly a former state trooper), did not face immediate arrest. Daniela remained in the ditch for 43 minutes, succumbing to her injuries around 10:03 PM—coinciding with the first lights of law enforcement arriving at the scene, as observed by a witness across the street.
It was later revealed that Brown was driving with illegal tints on his windows, windshield, and headlights. When he first appeared in court, he was quickly bailed out and did not spend a single night in jail. Authorities charged him with hit-and-run and illegal tinting; however, Daniela’s family feels these charges are insufficient, pushing for more severe charges like manslaughter. Her boyfriend’s mother later took pictures of the grass, clearly showing where Brown’s car had veered off the road, contradicting his claim that he struck her in the middle of the road and thought she was a deer, as Daniela’s blood trail began in the driveway. Viral TikToks and protests from Daniela’s family have drawn national attention, with community members organizing vigils and marches in her memory, demanding justice. This case has highlighted systemic issues within the justice system, sparking conversations about accountability, privilege, and the need for reform.
