“In January of last year, Joseph Estrada was ousted as president of the Philippines after droves of Filipinos converged at the EDSA Shrine to protest proceedings in Estrada’s impeachment trial. On May 1, the deposed president’s supporters staged what they called poor man’s [People Power] which ended in their storming of Mendiola Avenue where Malaca’ang Palace was to ‘drive out’ Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who replaced Estrada.
“The team of Emergency went to Mendiola to cover the historic action and drama. Here is the story of the different people involved — the police and military who defended the authority of the president, the reporters from the different media organizations who got caught in the bloody clash, and the Estrada and Arroyo supporters who each fought fearlessly for what they strongly believed in.”
