The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Tuesday (November 11) ordered the immediate repair of the damaged flood gate of the Estero de Paco Pumping Station in Manila to alleviate flooding in surrounding barangays.
The contractor told DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon during his inspection that they could fix the problem in two weeks, but Dizon wants it done in 10 days or even sooner.
“Kasama naman sa (two-year) warranty period pa ng contractor ito. 2024 pa lang na-turnover ‘to. Walang gastos ang gobyerno, gagawin nung contractor ‘to… Sa mga naapektuhan, ina-assure ko sila na magagawa natin ito nang pinakamabilis na panahon,” said Dizon.
As a result of the collapsed flood gate, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said it has also temporarily stopped operating the actual pumping stations, leaving 36 barangays within its catchment area vulnerable to both floodwaters and high tide.
“Sayang din ang operation kasi pabalik-balik yung tubig. Kahit i-release mo sa Pasig River, babalik din naman ulit,” said MMDA Engineer Arnulfo Aguirre Jr.
But Dizon said he will request to have mobile water pumping machines deployed in affected areas.
Initial assessment by the MMDA and the foreign consultant for the project said the flood gate may have collapsed due to intense water pressure coming from Pasig River at the height of Super Typhoon Uwan, late Sunday night.
