The International Criminal Court (ICC) Appeals Chamber was unanimous in its decision when it affirmed the Pre-Trial Chamber’s earlier decision to reject the request for the interim release of former President Rodrigo Duterte. The Chamber was convinced by the three grounds or arguments presented by the Duterte camp. Following the decision, Duterte will remain detained in The Hague while the ICC continues to hear the crimes against humanity case against him.
The case is in connection with the alleged extrajudicial killings (EJK) that happened during the Duterte drug war. The Duterte family says it respects the Appeals Chamber’s decision. While some of the former president’s supporters burst into tears. The relatives of the EJK victims are also emotional over what they consider a victory.
