On January 31, 1735, Governor-General Fernando Valdés y Tamón laid the cornerstone of the Ayuntamiento of Manila in Intramuros. Built of stone in the European architectural style, it became one of the finest public buildings of Spanish-era Manila and served as the seat of the town council.
The structure suffered severe damage during the earthquake of June 3, 1863, which destroyed its clock tower and forced officials to abandon the building temporarily. The original Ayuntamiento was later destroyed during World War II, marking the loss of one of Manila’s most significant colonial landmarks.
