Residents on Wednesday (October 1) in central Philippines recounted their ordeal, a day after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of the island of Cebu and killed 69 people, a disaster official said.

Mark Ochea, who was working as a security guard at a McDonald’s fast food restaurant when the disaster struck, described the scene when the building collapsed.

β€œIt really collapsed. It was like, bam, and then the other side of our building collapsed,” the 36-year-old said outside the restaurant now surrounded by rubble. β€œIt’s a good thing that all of the people were all out front.”

Meanwhile, 47-year-old tricycle driver Sonny Cuse was thankful his family and neighbours escaped unscathed even though they were all afraid.

The death toll from the earthquake rose to 69 on Wednesday, a disaster official said, as authorities mounted a rescue effort to find survivors after one of the country’s strongest quakes in a decade.

The shallow quake struck late on Tuesday (September 30) off the coast of the island of Cebu, cutting power and damaging buildings. It was not immediately clear how many people were missing.
