Movie Description

Manila in the Claws of Night (1975), originally titled Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, is a landmark Filipino film directed by National Artist Lino Brocka, starring Bembol Roco and Hilda Koronel.

The film follows Julio Madiaga (Bembol Roco), a young provincial man who travels to Manila in search of his missing lover, Ligaya Paraiso (Hilda Koronel). As he navigates the harsh realities of urban life, Julio confronts exploitation, poverty, corruption, and the brutal conditions faced by the working class.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest Filipino films of all time, Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag offers a powerful social commentary on inequality and the illusion of opportunity in the city. Through Brocka’s raw realism and emotionally charged storytelling, the film exposes the struggles of ordinary people trapped in the unforgiving “claws” of Manila.

In this video, we explore the film’s themes, symbolism, characters, and its lasting impact on Philippine and world cinema.
