Another earthquake measuring magnitude 6.9 struck Manay, Davao Oriental Friday night, just hours after a similar magnitude 7.4 temblor struck the same area.

Phivolcs chief Teresito Bacolcol said the quake struck at 7:12 p.m. and was felt at Intensity IV in Davao City and Bislig, Surigao del Norte. He said the new temblor is not an aftershock of the M7.4 quake Friday morning.

“The source of the quake is the Philippine Trench. Dito gumigitgit ‘yung Philippine seaplate sa ilalim ng Philippine archipelaga and as a result ng paggitgit ng Philippine Trench, nagkakaroon tayo ng friction and once na-overcome niya ‘yung friction, saka nagkakaroon ng lindol,” he said in a DZMM interview.

He denied that the earthquakes in Davao Oriental, Cebu province and La Union are connected.
A new tsunami warning was hoisted in Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental and Surigao del Norte but is expected to be taken down in two hours.
