A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck offshore in the southern Philippines on Friday, killing at least two people.

“It was very strong. We saw the ground and the cars moving. Even my friends are being swayed by the quake; it was so strong,” recalled a resident of Davao City, describing the panic and fear experienced during the earthquake.

The quake, in waters off the town of Manay in the province of Davao Oriental, triggered a tsunami alert for coasts within 300 km of the epicentre, but the warnings for the Philippines and Indonesia were subsequently lifted.

This earthquake was one of the strongest to hit the Philippines in recent years. The country is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and experiences more than 800 earthquakes each year.
