A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck offshore near Manay in Davao Oriental, southern Philippines, on Friday, killing at least two people and causing structural damage in nearby towns. Visuals from Panabo City show fire trucks and vehicles swaying violently as residents rushed outdoors to safety. Authorities initially issued tsunami alerts for coasts within 300 km of the epicentre, though warnings were later lifted for both the Philippines and Indonesia. The quake, among the strongest to hit the Philippines in recent years, has prompted warnings of strong aftershocks. Residents described scenes of panic, with many leaving buildings immediately as cracks appeared in structures. Videos captured by locals show overhead cables and vehicles shaking, while people crouched beside cars or held on tightly for safety. The southern Philippines lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and experiences more than 800 earthquakes each year. Just two weeks prior, a magnitude 6.9 quake in Cebu claimed 74 lives, marking the deadliest earthquake in over a decade for the central island. Authorities are conducting detailed damage assessments as they work to ensure public safety in the aftermath of Friday’s quake.
