Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte said on Friday (March 14) her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, was kidnapped and illegally arrested for his trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Rodrigo Duterte arrived in the Netherlands on a flight from Manila on Wednesday (March 12) after being arrested on an ICC warrant on charges of crimes against humanity. He was too ill to give evidence, his lawyer told International Criminal Court judges at his initial appearance on Friday.
“If you talk to lawyers, they call it extraordinary rendition. But for a family member like me, that’s kidnapping. That’s forcibly taking my father to another country and illegally arresting him,” Sara Duterte told reporters, standing in front of a crowd of supporters.
She said Duterte seemed well rested during her meeting with him and that his only complaint was that he missed Filipino food.
“Tell them (his supporters) to just relax, there is an end to everything. There will be a day of reckoning for all,” Sara Duterte quoted her father as saying.
Prosecutors have accused the 79-year-old of carrying out a systematic attack on the civilian population during his time in office. Thousands of purported drug dealers and users were killed during a crackdown, when death squads Duterte allegedly created and armed carried out widespread extrajudicial killings.
During the initial appearance, the judge summarised the allegations against Duterte, who was not asked to enter a plea. – report from Reuters
