Senator Alan Peter Cayetano emphasized in his remarks during the Senate session that impeaching an impeachable official should not be easy, given the limited number of impeachable officers in the country.
Cayetano explained that unlike past impeachments involving sitting officials wherein immediate action was necessary to prevent influence over office, he finds that there is no urgent reason in the case of Vice President Sara Duterte given that she does not hold a department, agency, or law enforcement institution.
“Yes, we should hold her accountable kung may ginawang mali. Dapat i-impeach ‘pag may ginawang mali. Pero, it’s not true that today and tomorrow matter that much. Because wala naman siyang opisina na magagamit to cover her tracks or to damage the country,” Cayetano said.
The Senate deliberates the next step for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte following the Supreme Court ruling declaring the Articles of Impeachment unconstitutional.
